Best Coast at The Firebird, 5.30.2012
With a new record under their belts, it’s a little surprising that Best Coast played a venue as small as The Firebird. Not that I’m complaining — a small, rabid crowd is far more fun to see (and photograph). Best Coast — aka, Bethany Cosentino, Bobb Bruno and whatever backing musicians they’ve got at the time — played a great set, despite some sound problems.

For the first time I can remember, The Firebird set up barricades to the side of their stage — probably to keep fans out of the piles of gear flanking the stage, but still, they provided some degree of “free space” for a few photographers to maneuver through.
That wasn’t the only surprise of the evening — Best Coast brought their own lights! LED backlighting from the band mixed with a nice haze (and largely white house lights) for a beautiful, colorful treatment. Sure, it wasn’t the sunkissed ISO 200 clarity from last years’ set at Kanrocksas, but it was more than enough for me.
